Co-washing

Co-washing (co-washing stands for Conditioner Only Washing) is washing your hair with conditioners that do not contain silicones, without using shampoos. Every man can try this kind of washing, but especially it is popular among men with curly hair because such type of hair is problematic by styling.  And co-washing helps with it.

In NYC Barbers recommend the co-washing procedure consists of several steps:

  1. Thoroughly wet hair and scalp with hot water. Water should be a few degrees hotter than you used to use.
  2. Type two large handfuls of conditioner and massage them into the hair roots, slowly adding water and distributing the conditioner along the length.
  3. Add water and continue to massage the hair roots until thick foam appears. Use much conditioner; it is the only way to clean the hair from dirt.
  4. Carefully wash the conditioner out of your hair, it will take about five minutes. After such a shampoo, you can use any mask and hair styling products that you like. Co-washing can be completely replaced by regular washing of the head, or you can use it a couple of times a week as a hair care treatment.

Advantages of co-washing:

  • it changes the structure of hair, from dry and porous, they become alive and elastic;
  • hair is better styled, shine appears;
  • sebaceous glands are not irritated by aggressive lauryl sulfates, which are in shampoos, and therefore produce less fat;
  • co-washing protects the pigment of dyed hair, protects it from leaching and oxidation.

The cons of co-washing:

  • too active massage of the scalp can cause its damage, especially if you have long nails;
  • due to the fact that co-washing removes fluffiness, it seems that the hair becomes smaller and lacks volume;
  • difficulty in washing the hair if the conditioner is bad for washing, the hair will look stale and get dirty faster;
  • there is an opinion that such washing “relaxes” hair and they become more sensitive to natural aggressive factors (cold, sun, etc.).
